Étude de cas

École de Battersea integrates fencing into its curriculum not as sport alone, but as a vehicle for character development. This brand film was commissioned to articulate that distinctive educational philosophy , translating the values of the piste into a visual narrative that resonates with prospective families, staff, and the wider school community.

Le brief

Produce a cinematic brand film capturing how École de Battersea uses fencing as a framework for character education. The film needed to communicate discipline, respect, focus, and perseverance , not through exposition, but through the energy and ritual of students on the piste and in the classroom. It would serve corporate communication, website hero placement, and stakeholder presentations.

Le défi

  • Translating an abstract pedagogical philosophy , character through fencing , into a visually compelling film without relying on talking heads or heavy narration
  • Filming young students during live fencing sessions while maintaining safety protocols, natural energy, and authentic interaction on camera
  • Differentiating this brand film from the school's existing promotional and portrait content (025-01, 025-02) while maintaining visual continuity across the parent brand
  • Balancing the dynamism of fencing footage with quieter, reflective moments that convey personal growth and character development
  • Producing a long-form asset flexible enough for website hero, social excerpts, and boardroom presentations without losing narrative coherence
  • Working within school calendar and timetable constraints to capture fencing sessions, classroom scenes, and campus atmosphere in a single production window

L’approche

  • Developed a visual concept anchored in the metaphor of 'the piste as classroom' , intercutting fencing sequences with moments of concentration, collaboration, and respect observed throughout the school day
  • Conducted a pre-production walkthrough to map gymnasium lighting, identify the strongest angles for fencing choreography, and plan camera positions that would not disrupt the session
  • Shot handheld and on stabiliser to blend the kinetic energy of lunges and parries with steadier, contemplative portraits of students before and after practice
  • Structured the edit around a three-act rhythm , preparation, engagement, reflection , mirroring the fencing bout itself to give the film an internal narrative arc
  • Graded the footage with a warm, natural palette consistent with the École de Battersea brand identity established in sibling projects, ensuring cross-campaign coherence
  • Delivered in multiple formats: a full-length hero cut, a 60-second social edit, and a looping background version optimised for the school website landing page

La réalisation

The shoot was completed in a single day on the Battersea campus, timed to coincide with scheduled fencing classes to capture genuine student engagement rather than staged scenarios. Two cameras ran simultaneously , one tracking action on the piste, the other isolating details: the grip on the foil, the salute, the focused gaze through the mask. Between sessions, additional B-roll was captured across corridors, classrooms, and the school entrance to contextualise fencing within the broader educational environment. Post-production wove these layers into a cohesive film that moves between physicality and contemplation, underpinned by a carefully selected score reinforcing discipline and aspiration without overwhelming the natural soundscape of the school.

Le résultat

The brand film gives École de Battersea a distinctive narrative asset that no competitor school in the area can replicate. By anchoring the school's identity in a tangible, visible practice , fencing , the film makes the abstract promise of 'character education' concrete and emotionally resonant. Multi-format delivery ensures the asset works across digital, social, and in-person contexts, providing durable value well beyond a single campaign cycle. The film complements existing portrait and promotional content from sibling projects, completing a coherent visual ecosystem for the school brand.
