Case Study

Hometainment brings the party to your house: bartenders, chefs, magicians and hosts who turn up at your door. For one evening in February they borrowed an interiors showroom in London, all chandeliers, exposed brick, striped sofas and a full-height living wall, and invited clients, partners and press to try the experiences in person. Mixologists in green aprons behind the bar, a close-up card table by the fireplace, tote bags reading "Hosting is my therapy". I covered the evening from the first arrivals to the last cocktail.

The Brief

Bring back a set that sells the idea: the experiences themselves and guests enjoying them, ready the next morning for Instagram, the partners' channels and the press kit. And a proper group portrait for everyone who asked for one.

The Challenge

  • A showroom is lit to sell furniture, not to be photographed: table lamps, chandeliers and a green wall, all warm, low and mixed. Guests kept moving between three rooms and a mezzanine.
  • A promotional evening is also a portrait job. People want to be photographed together, quickly, between two conversations, and still look good. A flash on a stand would have killed the room and the mood.

The Approach

  • Available light only, a fast lens and high ISO, white balance set for the tungsten so skin stays warm and the living wall stays green.
  • Two registers alternate through the set. Candid reportage of the bar, the card table and the conversations, shot from the edges. Then quick, relaxed group portraits, always in the same spot in front of the living wall so the portraits sit together as a series.
  • One frame from the mezzanine looking down on the card table gives the layout of the room and how the experiences fit into it.

The Execution

One photographer, one evening, 23 finished frames selected and edited overnight and delivered the next morning.

The Outcome

A same-week social set for Hometainment and the venue, portraits for the guests and partners who came, and a record of the evening that went straight into the promotional material.
