Case Study
A startup team took a day out of the office and into a loft in London, exposed brick, tall windows, green velvet sofas, for a positioning workshop run by Louis Grenier, the marketer behind Stand The F*ck Out. The day opened with a screen reading BONJOUR BONJOUR and went on through the exercises: pick your area of focus, list the intense and frequent struggles, define your segment. Copies of the book on the table, laptops open, flip charts filling up. In the afternoon break I set up by a window and made a headshot of everyone.
The Brief
Document the away day for the company's internal channels, careers page and LinkedIn, and use the same day to refresh the team headshots, without a studio and without stopping the workshop.
The Challenge
- A workshop is people sitting, thinking and writing for six hours in one room. The pictures have to find the energy in that: the laugh at a slide, the disagreement across the table, the facilitator mid-gesture.
- The photographer must not become part of the workshop. No directing, no asking for a look, working from the edges of the room while people concentrate.
- And the headshots had to fit into a twenty-minute break: one wall, one window, ten people, consistent enough to sit side by side on a team page.
The Approach
- Daylight from the tall windows, a long lens from the edges of the room and a lot of waiting. The slides stay in the frame wherever they can, because they say what the room is working on.
- The set moves between the wide room, the working table and the sofas where the pairs went to think, then close on hands, notebooks and faces.
- For the headshots, one spot against the brick, side light from the window, the same framing for everyone, a minute each. Relaxed, arms crossed or hands in pockets, in what they wore that day.
The Execution
One photographer for the whole day. 46 finished frames: the workshop from the opening slide to the closing exercise, and ten natural-light headshots made in a single break.
The Outcome
A day the team could show: reportage for LinkedIn, the careers page and internal comms, and a matching set of headshots for the team page, all from one booking and without a studio day.
An away day, an offsite or a workshop to photograph?
We cover team days as reportage, from the edges of the room, and add a headshot session in a break so one booking feeds LinkedIn, careers pages and the team page.
