Case Study

Schmidt is the French kitchen and interiors maker from Alsace, and Morax is part of its UK content team on an ongoing basis: exhibition films at Grand Designs Live and Decorex, showroom films in Islington and Winchester, customer installation stories and the head-office team headshots. This session went back to the Islington showroom, for the people who work there. They wanted portraits that looked like them and like the place customers walk into: not a grey studio sweep, but the wall of oak, walnut and lacquer fronts they spend their days talking people through, with the red-dot Schmidt logo sitting just above their shoulders.

The Brief

Individual headshots for each member of the showroom team and a group picture, for the showroom's website, Google Business profile, LinkedIn and local marketing, shot on site without closing the shop.

The Challenge

  • A showroom is a shop, not a studio. Customers come in, the phone rings, and every surface is a product that has to look right: the sample wall is busy with dozens of finishes, labels and angles that can swallow a face.
  • The team also ranges from people who are photographed often to people who would rather not be, and the pictures had to sit together as one set.

The Approach

  • One spot in front of the sample wall, chosen so the Schmidt logo and the wood fronts frame each person without competing with them. Soft light on the faces, the showroom's own light behind, and enough depth of field to keep the finishes readable as texture rather than detail.
  • Most frames are standing half-lengths in landscape, wide enough for a website banner with room left for text. One team member also got two tighter vertical crops for profile use, and changed jacket halfway through, which gave two looks: a pinstripe for formal use and a lighter grey for everyday.
  • The group picture closes the session, three people shoulder to shoulder in front of the product they sell.

The Execution

One photographer, one setup, a short session fitted around the showroom's opening hours. Eleven finished frames: individual portraits, mostly landscape with two vertical crops, and three group pictures, all with one consistent grade.

The Outcome

A matching set of team portraits that shows who customers will meet and where, ready for the website, the Google Business profile, LinkedIn and local press, without a studio day or a closed shop. It carries the head-office headshot library made for Schmidt UK onto the showroom floor.
