Hélène Brandily is a London-based copywriter who works with purpose-driven brands , the kind of work where emotional intelligence matters as much as strategic clarity. She needed personal branding imagery that could carry both qualities simultaneously: professional enough for corporate clients, warm enough to reflect the way she actually works.
The Brief
Produce a cohesive personal branding portrait series at The Designer's Penthouse in London, using natural light and warm tones. The images had to serve three platforms , website hero, LinkedIn profile, and editorial positioning , while communicating authenticity, clarity, and approachability without tipping into any one register.
The Challenge
- Personal branding photography for writers is uniquely difficult , the work itself is invisible, so the images have to communicate a way of thinking, not a visible craft.
- The session needed to balance warmth and authority; too approachable reads as casual, too polished reads as corporate , neither matches Hélène's positioning.
- Natural light at the Penthouse location shifts constantly through the day, which means the colour temperature and shadow quality change between setups.
- Three target platforms , website, LinkedIn, and editorial , each carry different visual expectations and implicit codes of professionalism.
- Capturing genuine moments of focus (laptop, coffee, reading) without them feeling staged or performative, which is the default failure mode of 'working' shots.
- The subject isn't a model; sustained presence in front of a camera requires a directorial approach that draws out expression rather than manufacturing it.
The Approach
- The session was structured around real activities , writing, reading, coffee , rather than posed setups, so every frame has a reason to exist beyond the photograph itself.
- We scouted the Penthouse's light patterns in advance and scheduled each setup around the window positions that produced the warmest, most directional natural light.
- Direction stayed conversational throughout; rather than calling out poses, we talked through ideas and let the body language follow the thinking.
- Compositions were built around three pillars from Hélène's own brief: authenticity over performance, warmth without losing authority, clarity of identity.
- Each setup was designed to produce at least one portrait crop (LinkedIn), one environmental crop (website hero), and one editorial crop (press or blog use) from the same frame.
- Post-production kept the grade warm and natural , no heavy retouching, no skin smoothing , preserving the tactile quality of the Penthouse's materials and light.
The Execution
The session ran at The Designer's Penthouse across an afternoon, working through the space as the natural light shifted. We began with the warmest window position for relaxed laptop and coffee setups, moved to a harder side-light for the more structured headshots, and finished with softer backlit compositions as the day cooled. Direction was minimal and conversational , Hélène talked about her work while we captured the expressions and gestures that emerged naturally. Between environmental setups, we pulled tighter for clean portrait crops suitable for LinkedIn and speaker profiles. Post-production applied a light warm grade and left the skin untouched, keeping the final images honest to the atmosphere of the afternoon.
The Outcome
Hélène received a cohesive visual library that covers her entire digital presence , website hero imagery, LinkedIn headshots, and editorial portraits for press and blog features. The three-pillar approach (authenticity, warmth, clarity) produced images that communicate who she is before a single word of copy is read. The natural-light direction at the Penthouse gave the series a distinctive warmth that separates her from the studio-lit corporate headshots most freelancers rely on, positioning her firmly as someone who works at the intersection of strategy and human connection.
